The iPhone 5 comes out in less than a week, and that, of course, means a price drop for the iPhones 4 and 4S. If you plan to save some money by not going for the latest model, or if you just don’t want to upgrade, you’re still going to need protection. In that case, check out Musubo, as they have some of the best cases I’ve used in quite a while.
The Musubo iPhone 4/4S line has some diverse designs, and we tried three: the Eden, Sneaker and Retro. Their looks will certainly appear to different groups of iPhone users, but I’ll first address the commonality between them.
It starts with the construction. It’s quite hefty, but in the best way imaginable. All three fit snugly around the sides of your iPhone—whether by a soft TPU material (Sneaker), a combo of a strong polycarbonate shell and soft silicon rubber interior (Retro), or strong polycarbonate frame and soft touch silicone flap (Eden)—but add around 50% more depth to the back of the phone. I was put off by this at first, but after actually using the phone inside the cases, I quickly came to love them. It makes the iPhone feel more substantial. Less delicate. And better yet, the added depth still feels natural. It’s more comfortable to hold for phone calls, typing and gaming. And if you do need to keep things slim, they’re all fairly easy to get on and off.
Protection differs amongst the three, with the Retro and Sneaker providing more coverage than the Eden, but all of them allowing for easy access to controls and ports. The camera opening is a bit tight, and I expected the deepness to impact the flash, but pictures taken in low light still turned out as okay as the iPhone will allow.
All models come with a screen protector, a microfiber cleaning cloth, and even a foldable video stand.
There are some color options amongst the three, as well. The Eden comes in green, baby blue, orange, rose pink, black, yellow, purple, and white. Retro is available in black, blue, red, silver, white, and yellow. Sneaker gets a bit more fun, offering two interchangeable “soles” per case: black/white, brown/olive, red/yellow, rose pink/baby blue, and lime/purple, along with a coordinated bumper color.
Musubo took a pretty big chance by adding some heft to the iPhone’s sleekness, but it pays off here. The combination of funky fashion and solid protection come together in a unique line of cases that I wouldn’t have thought would work, but do very well. I’m looking forward to seeing what they bring to the iPhone 5.
