The recent benchmarks for the 2.0 and 2.4GHz iMacs have shown modest gains over the models they’ve replaced, but what about the mighty 2.8GHz iMac? Built around Intel’s Core 2 Duo Extreme processor, this machine screams “power”. Primate labs ran several tests that showed substantial speed gains for the 2.8GHz processor in almost all test categories.
What’s more interesting with this “Extreme” processor is the fact that it’s actually a 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme X7800. The folks at Cupertino must’ve decided that said processor was fairly nippy, so they’ve bumped it up by an extra 200MHz. I’m not sure whether this was solely to gain more performance or just as a marketing tool where “faster is better”, but the results are much better.
