Based on the famous MechWarrior franchise, Personae Studios has released MechWarrior: Tactical Command for iPad. If you’ve played the board game before, you’ll have an idea how this game plays. Combining unique and innovative multi-touch game controls, the game brings the BattleTech universe into the iPad platform. The result? Definitely a good game loaded with real time tactical strategy gameplay, a variety of Battle Mechs to control and tons of customization options.

MechWarrior Tactical Command iPad game review

In MechWarrior, your battle mechs will perform missions varying from destroying enemy posts to annihilating enemy mechs. Controlling your mech is all touch-base. Double tap on the screen to bring out the various moves that your battle mechs can do, such as walk, run or stop. Attacking nearby enemies is pretty much automatic, or you can simply tap on them to initiate attacks from your battle mechs.

The game is loaded with many battle mechs (30, to be precise) you can deploy onto the battlefiled in completing the game’s 21 levels set on three locations or planets, some of which will be familiar as they are taken from the board game series.

Like many real-time strategy games, you’ll earn points, which in this case are called C-bills. You can use these C-bills to upgrade your mechs and apply further customization, turning them into lean, mean, fighting battle mech machines.

Another good thing going for the game is the in-game story which develops as you play along. The voice acting is good, and the story will keep you entertained as you take a break from the actual battles.

Graphically, I have some reservations with the rendering of the battle mechs. They are quite small relative to the game environment. I would love to see the battle mechs bigger, but that may be asking too much of an RTS. The game developers may have put more emphasis on gameplay than the graphics, but the explosions and sound effects are good, if not great.

I can recommend MechWarrior: Tactical Command only if you don’t mind the price that you have to pay to get it. If you’re thinking the game might bore you because of the lack of cool animations and graphics, I can assure you the gameplay and the tactical elements of the game more than compensate for the lack of graphics flare.

MechWarrior: Tactical Command is available now on the iTunes App Store for $9.99. If you enjoy RTS games, this one is for you.
