Another iPhone, another GelaSkin. That’s just the way it works. If you don’t like the bulk of hard shell or silicon cases but still want some protection; if you like the sleek lines of the iPhone but still want some color; if you like that Apple logo but prefer whales capsizing boats, then GelaSkins is the way to go.
When you’re looking for a skin for your iPhone, GelaSkins should always be one of the first websites you load up. Their low-profile, laminated vinyl decals are made from a patented 3M material that is easy to apply, mainly because it’s also easy to remove. If you don’t get the fit right the first time, simply lift it up and tray again. In fact, if you keep the backing on which the skin ships, you can store it there during periods when you don’t want the skin, then put it back on when you’re ready.
Even though I’ve applied a ridiculous number of skins for review, I still never get it right the first time. But I have learned to fully wipe down the iPhone first, make sure my hands are freshly washed, then be patient and not fear lifting the skin to get better alignment (using the camera opening helps). Once the skin is on, it’s quite easy to smooth out any bubbles with a microfiber cloth.
The skin comes with the large back decal as well as pieces for the top and bottom of the front. A small cutout around the home button allows you to cover that, as well, but I usually forgo that piece; it never feels right to me, although it’s great to have the option.
With each order, GelaSkins also provides a wallpaper image to use on your lock and/or home screen. This is e-mailed to you, and the alignment with the front decals has always been spot-on. GelaSkins was even current enough to size this appropriately for the larger iPhone 5 screen.
It’s possible that whales fighting boats isn’t your thing. No worries. GelaSkins has over 1,000 designs from over 100 artists at your disposal, although many aren’t yet sized specifically for the iPhone 5. If that’s that case, GelaSkins gives you the tools online to determine your own placement.
You won’t find any movie tie-ins, album covers or sports logos there, though. GelaSkins is all about supporting artists. And I have to tell you, I’ve already had more compliments on my Devil Whale than on any recognizable skin I’ve had in the past. You can also go custom, but that’s another review for another time.
What you don’t get with a GelaSkin is screen protection (you have to buy that separately), scratch protection for the sides of the phone (they’ve included that in the past, but seem to have dropped it with the iPhone 5), or any protection at all from drops. For the latter issue, though, the skins are thin enough (less than 1mm) to fit inside most cases when you need an additional layer of security.
Still, GelaSkins are a great deal at $14.95. They look great, they go on well, and they’ll keep your new iPhone 5 scratch-free. They can also portray whales destroying boats…something I’m sure Apple didn’t dare dream up even back in the Flower Power and Dalmatian iMac days.
