The new EyeTV Mobile from Elgato, in partnership with Dyle’s live mobile TV broadcast service, is now available to bring live streaming TV to your iPhone or iPad.  The best part? Since the EyeTV is picking up the signal via a built-in antenna, watching streaming television programming does not use up any of your coveted data plan, unlike other streaming services.

Dyle me In

Dyle’s service is an extension of old school broadcast television, rather than a streaming service like Netflix or Amazon Prime. The Dyle offering currently includes channels like NBC, Fox, Telemundo, Univision, and the children’s channel Qubo, and is available in major metropolitan areas from Atlanta to Seattle, Boston to Phoenix.

Not all stations are available in all areas, but where the Dyle service is available, you can watch live broadcast television on a Dyle-compatible device, which now includes the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and iPad Mini courtesy of the Elgato EyeTV.

The Eye(TV) of the Beholder

Elgato has long been a leader in the market of getting live TV on your Mac, so it makes sense that they would be the best way to get TV on your iDevice.  Enter the EyeTV mobile: roughly 21st century equivalent of rabbit ears (minus the tinfoil and eight foot reach), the EyeTV mobile allows you to pick up Dyle’s broadcast television and watch it via the EyeTV Mobile app. The app even includes advanced TV features like pause/resume and access to detailed program guide information.

The EyeTV mobile plugs in to your iDevice’s 30 pin Dock connector, though users of iPhone 5, iPad 4, or iPad Mini can use a Lightning-to-Dock adaptor with no trouble. All users will need iOS 5.1 or later. A miniature telescoping aerial (antenna) attaches directly to the EyeTV tuner, while a standalone rod aerial with a magnetic/suction cup base is available for greater signal strength when needed. Elgato estimates the EyeTV can deliver 9 hours of live TV to an iPad or up to 4 hours on an iPhone before the device will need recharging.

Available now at elgato or Amazon, the EyeTV mobile will set you back $99. Perfect for catching up on nightly news broadcasts or the latest must see TV dramas, the EyeTV would make a great stocking stuffer for anyone who hates to wait for shows to come out on Hulu.
