This week on the Free Apps Roundup: It’s been 40 years, but Pong is just as fun now as it ever was. Atari is celebrating the anniversary with a free upgrade to the classic. And while you’re reminiscing about really old game systems, you might as well download the Vectrex app. If you didn’t know it, Vectrex was a console in the 1980s. Also, Apple updated iTunes to version 11 and along with it there comes a new Remote app for taking control wirelessly. If that isn’t enough to get you excited, there’s always the list of limited time freebies full of games and even a virtual chemistry lab.

The Top Three:

  • Pong World – Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Atari’s best known game, PONG. This update to the classic game has s dazzling unique twist and a colorful new look. There are paddle creatures, paddle upgrades and power, 4 different locations and much more. Who said you couldn’t download fun?
  • Remote – To go along with Apple’s update to iTunes 11, Remote has been upgraded to make controlling iTunes and Apple TV easier than ever. Looks are simpler, browsing is easier and you can even edit what’s coming up next. You’ll feel like an amateur DJ in no time.
  • Vectrex – Relive the original Vectrex retro games console from the 1980s with this totally authentic experience. There’s an extensive game library available and they’ll even give you Minestorm for free.

Free:

  • Towers & Dungeons – Who needs a tiny tower or a little kingdom if one can rule the world? Everybody wants to rule the world. Explore the world of Eugene, a little green dragon, and help him find home.
  • The Bowling Dead – One man, and his balls, stand in the way of a world overrun by the undead. Yes, it’s a free to play zombie bowling game.
  • STREET FIGHTER X TEKKEN Gauntlet – Get a taste of the Street Fighter and Tekken franchises in this free game. How many opponents will you be able to take down?
  • Arcane Legends – Experience Adventure Unleased. Team up with your friends for this online coop RPG with mystical pets, majestic forests and dank mines.

Free for a limited time:

  • Weathercube – Here’s a unique take on a weather app. It has gesture based controls. There are no buttons. Just swipe, pinch and tap your way through weather information.
  • Night Night! Winter Special – An interactive bedtime book for children on the Nighty Night farm.
  • EpicLyrics – Find the lyrics and/or translation to all of the songs on your device with this app.
  • FreeSkate Xtreme – It’s an endless running, er, skating game that wants you to perform the flashiest stunts by tilting and shifting your device. There’s even motion tracking technology to have you perform dazzling moves using your head.
  • FreeSkate Xtreme HD – The same for iPad.
  • Freeze! – Help the distraught hero overcome gravity, turn worlds and even escape from this cramped cell on a planet far far away. It’s a physics-based, rotating puzzle game.
  • Parking Star 2 – A leisure game that simulates real parking. Choose a vehicle, then get to parking!
  • Flick Golf! – No clubs, no rules, just flick, spin and curve your shots to win. It’s a 3D golf game made for flicking.
  • Flick Golf HD – The same for iPad.
  • Twang the Fox – Help Twang the Fox and he embarks on a heroic adventure mixing addictive platforming gameplay with intuitive one-touch controls.
  • Montezuma Puzzle – Here’s a simple, logical and relaxing puzzle game. All you have to do is arrange patterns to make the puzzle pieces fit. Easy, right?
  • Cats Away – You are a cat loving alien. No, not like Alf. No, you need to save the cats. The planet of the cats is in trouble and the only way you can save the cats is, unfortunately, by abducting them in your spaceship.
  • Chemist – Are you a mad scientist in desperate need of a portable laboratory? Do I have good news for you. Chemist is a virtual reality lab for mixing chemicals, lighting things on fire and just all around good science-based fun. Not only is it fun, it’s educational and you won’t even blow the block sky high.
