This week, Apple opened its doors for customers to purchase an iPhone 5 without signing a contract with a phone carrier. Apple has unlocked GSM iPhone 5 models for online and store purchase in both black and white models. The unlocked phone swill cost around $649 (16GB model), $749 (32GB model), and $849 (64GB models). According to Apple’s estimates, models will start shipping within one to weeks and customers will get notified upon delivery.

As you can see in the small type above, U.S. shoppers interested in buying an unlocked iPhone 5 should advised that it will work only on AT&T and T-Mobile GSM networks; CDMA carriers such as Verizon Wireless and Sprint aren’t supported.

Apple still offers the original iPhone 4S contract-free at a starting price of $549 for the 16GB model, and the iPhone 4 with 8GB costs $450 dollars.
