Christmas Cards were “invented” in 1846 by artist John Callcot Horsely of Britain’s Royal Academy on a commission from Sir Henry Cole, who wanted a greeting card he could send to friends and acquaintances, and also hoped to boost usage volume for the Penny Post he had helped three years earlier. According to Wikipedia, in 1875 printer Louis Prang introduced Chrsitmas Cards in America, but cheap imitations eventually drove him from the market.
Hard copy greeting cards are now the exception rather than the rule, due to the cost of postage and the proliferation of computers, but surveys indicate most people still prefer receiving greeting cards in the mail hand-delivered in preference over e-cards, regarding a physical card as more meaningful than the electronic alternative.
Your Mac or iOS device can be a big help in buying or creating physical greeting cards as well as e-cards.
OS X Apps
Ohanaware’s Fun Greetings application is a card printing program, where your photos are the star. And unlike store-bought cards, the emphasis of these Photo Greetings Cards can be photos of your family, kids, pets and other photos you may have taken. Fun Greetings enables you to print your own Photo Greetings Cards at home on your Mac and printer.
Using Fun Greetings is a simple “1, 2, 3″ process:
- Choose the style of your card.
- Add a photo.
- Print your card.
No need to read any help documents before you begin, although Ohanaware does provide a getting started guide and help if you want it.
Fun Greetings has a clever print engine that can compensate for printer margins (so you don’t get huge gaps down one side), and can print to a variety of card sizes with support for custom sizes. You can even print a card to fit a spare envelope that may be lying around.
Fun Greetings costs $9.99, but you can try it for free to decide if Photo Greetings Cards are for you. Simply download the free trial. During the trial period, Export and auto resume are disabled. Watermarks will be placed on the back of the user’s greetings card.
