Provides: Protection for iPhone
Minimum Requirements: iPhone 5
I got into biking a couple of months ago, and I’ve been bringing my iPhone 5 and just putting it in one of the back pockets of my cycling jersey. There’s really no problem with that since the pocket is deep enough to prevent my iPhone 5 from slipping out, but after my biking activity, the iPhone 5’s screen is soaked from my sweat which passes through my Jersey. To remedy this I’ve wanted a full-proof case that will not only protect my iPhone 5 from bumps and scratches but also keep it free from moisture and dust.
Long story short, I ordered the Lifeproof Fre iPhone 5 case, one of the toughest (if not the toughest) cases made for the iPhone. The Lifeproof Fre is an upgraded version of the case made for the iPhone 4S redesigned to suit the size and form factor of the iPhone 5. Feature-wise, both Lifeproof iPhone cases are pretty much the same.
This means that when using the case, you can go underwater and take snaps using your iPhone 5. You can now go as deep as 6 meters and your iPhone 5 will still be protected from water leaking through the case. Take note that this is not an overhyped manufacturer claim. Lifeproof does suggest you do the waterproofing test before you use it on your iPhone 5. I did it, and I’m no longer afraid to use my iPhone 5 when I go swimming or snorkeling (let alone biking).
The Lifeproof Fre iPhone 5 case is also dirt proof, snow proof and shock proof. I’ll take the manufacturer’s word for it.
Moving on, another thing that you’ll like from the Lifeproof Fre iPhone 5 case is that it does not add too much bulk to the iPhone 5. It maintains a low-profile and make sure that you’ll not be easily turn-off by the added bulk as compared to other ruggedized, and ultra-protective iPhone 5 cases available in the market today.
The Lifeproof iPhone 5 case combines shock-absorbing rubber materials with hard plastic for optimum protection. The case’s rubber part is nice to grip and comfortably surrounds the iPhone 5 for the protection it needs. The case is composed of two parts—the rubber frame the holds the iPhone 5 and the rubber cover with the plastic screen.
Speaking of the plastic screen, here lies the Lifeproof Fre’s drawback. The screen may be adequate for preventing scratches on the your iPhone, but it poses some problems with touch gestures. The case was designed in such as way that there’s a gap between the iPhone 5 screen and the plastic screen. Hence, you’ll notice oil streaks that will appear from time to time.
Lifeproof also claims that the Fre improves the iPhone 5 speaker’s performance. Honestly, I didn’t notice the difference at all when I listened to music.
To sum it all up., the Lifeproof Fre iPhone 5 case is a very good protective case with several add-on features that cater to users with active lifestyles. The case ensures your iPhone 5 will be unharmed when you bring it on your next bike ride or run.
Oh, and speaking of bikes, you’ll want to check out the Lifeproof Fre iPhone 5 case bike mount, a review of which will be posted here soon.
