Equal parts toolbox and toybox, FxFactory Pro is a collection of 176 video effects, filters, and transitions for Final Cut, Motion, After Effects, and Premiere Pro. It’s a grab-bag of software, some of which is of immediate usefulness, some of which makes a complicated process easier, and a few which are outright gimmicky and fun. Taken as a whole, they give you a range of color correction and effects similar to what you get with Adobe Photoshop.
It’s a veritable cornucopia of effects, ranging from several types of blur and color correction to transitions that duplicate the effect of changing the channel on an analog TV. You can read a complete breakdown of each effect (and all their settings), but suffice it to say that the 400 bucks you’re laying out for FxFactory Pro is going to give you a rather robust set of tools for video editing.
And the best part is that almost every parameter is keyframeable. In the image below, this American Bittern was stalking through the lush green reeds of a Florida wetland. But by desaturating the green I’m able to draw attention to the bird. Using keyframes, I can animate that effect so that the scene starts in full color which slowly leaches away as it steps out into the open.
A lot of the plug-ins won’t work in naturalistic filmmaking, but if you’re producing credits, bumpers, or other packages where you need a fun, energetic effect, FxFactory Pro has you covered with a wild variety of transitions such as a photocopier effect, another that transforms your video to look like a sonic waveform, breaking your video in various shapes, or an OS X-like Genie effect where the image sinks into the bottom of the screen. And that’s just a handful of the video distortion effects you get, like the ability to break your image down into geometric shapes.
FxFactory Pro is a great general purpose set of tools for video production, especially if you’re in a situation where you need dynamic effects alongside day-to-day concerns like color correction and masking. The already massive collection of plug-ins can be keyframed and combined to create a near-infinite amount of effects.
