Today, Twitter has gone official with the previously rumored music service that it was set to launch. Twitter #music for iPhone and other iOS devices is now available for download from the iTunes App Store, and soon from the web, as well, at music.twitter.com. It’s currently available in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. According to Twitter, it will be made available to more countries and to Android as well.
So what is the Twitter #music app? According to the company, it’s a new service that will change the way you find music, based on Twitter, obviously. The app uses Twitter activity such as tweets and engagement in detecting and surfacing popular tracks as well as emerging artists. In addition, the app brings artists’ music-related Twitter activity up front and at the center; see which music artists you follow, listen to their songs and tweet songs right from the app.
Currently, songs on Twitter #music come from three services: iTunes, Spotify and Rdio. Music previews are played from iTunes, while Spotify and Rdio subscribers can use the app to log in and enjoy full tracks available in the catalogs of the two music services.
As an iOS app, Twitter #music looks pretty neat, and the navigation is sleek and simple to understand. Of course, it would be best if you’re subscribed to either Spotify or Rdio to maximize the potential of this new mobile music service .
So, go ahead and download the app, take it for a spin, and leave us a comment to tell us what you think.
