LEGO, the brand and the product, is a staple of every household with small children. It’s the benchmark toy for birthdays and Christmas for my kids. So, when I saw that LEGO had developed an app catering specifically to the very wee ones, I thought it my parental duty to download it.
It’s essentially a side scrolling, coin collecting platformer. The idea is that you can build your own LEGO vehicle and drive it. You start out by selecting from a couple of vehicle chassis in different colors. You then move on to choosing suitable wheels before deciding on a front and back end.
In the game itself there is only one button: forward. You press that and start collecting small gold LEGO coins as you progress to the end of each level. At their conclusion you get the chance to build a LEGO statue which is then unlocked for you to try again whenever you like.
The levels are all very similar and punctuated with the same LEGO statues you build at the end of each stage. The addictive thing about the game is that when you collect enough coins, you unlock a new LEGO part, which can then be used to add to your vehicle in the next stage. Early on you can unlock a helicopter and Police car which give the user a second button enabling the rotors and sirens respectively.
The audio in the game is great; very upbeat and playful, and the vehicles make a great noise. The graphics are sharp and the animation is basic but colorful and attractive.
There doesn’t appear to be any story and no real “point” to the game as such, but it displays all the soulful qualities of creativity, adventure and exploration that LEGO promotes.
I loved the game, and my children’s incessant nagging to play it again and again says it all, really. LEGO App4+ is a kids game through and through, but one that’s truly developed and produced with the child in mind. A great game.
