Free AppsThis week on the Free Apps Roundup: If you’re a collectible card game fan, you’re bound to enjoy the new game from Wizards of the Coast: Magic 2014. It’s a virtual card game with tons to do and probably just enough free content to get you hooked. Fans of the Professor Layton series will be excited to see the new Layton Brothers Mystery Room game. And if you’re bitter about Google closing down their Reader service, you’ll have mixed feelings about one of the very best apps on the App Store, Reeder, going free. Plus there are a ton more limited time freebies just waiting to fill up your iOS devices.

The Top Three Free Apps:

  • Magic 2014 – Become a Planeswalker and travel the places of existence unleashing a torrent of spells and creatures with this game from Wizards of the Coast. The game comes with 3 decks, each with 5 unlock able cards. There’s a single player campaign across the plane of Shandalar, one Planeswalker duel, a sealed Play mode and tons of extra content to purchase if you really enjoy it. If you’re a Magic: The Gathering fan with an iPad, you’re going to like this.
  • Layton Brothers Mystery Room – The latest game from the Professor Layton adventure game series. There are new mysteries to be solved by the genius inspector and son of the great Professor Layton. There are extraordinary cases to be investigated in the “Mystery Room” deep within Scotland Yard. Investigate the evidence, find the contradictions, and unravel the truth that lies shrouded in mystery.
  • Reeder – This is an amazing app for reading RSS feeds. It’s easily the most used app on my iPhone. Unfortunately, Google decided to kill their very popular Reader product, which is what has made this app so useful for so long. Sunday June 30th will be the last day that Google Reader will function, and thus this app has been made free. But fear not, Reader will be updated in the near future to support other similar services going forward. In the meantime, you can use this app to read RSS feeds directly (no syncing service) and wait for a future update.

Free Apps:

  • Hangouts – Google has updated their Hangouts app with support for sending and clicking links, invitations via SMS, in-app notification sounds, and more.
