It’s rare I ever get a case for review where I think I wouldn’t mind if the iPhone 5 looked like this out of the box, but that’s exactly how I feel about the Moshi iGlaze Armour for iPhone 5. It may be how Apple feels, too; if the rumors of a gold iPhone 5S are true, the renderings we’ve seen don’t stray far from Moshi’s iGlaze Armour bronze.

But that’s not part of this review, as the unit Moshi provided us with is the black model. It has a striking, diamond-cut aluminum backplate with a brushed-metal look, accented by silver cutout ring around the phone’s Apple logo. I wish the cutout wasn’t there, though, if only because of the dust that collects inside of it. Moshi does provide a buffer film to protect your iPhone from the dust and possible scratches, but it’s still somewhat unsightly.

[Note that the green tint in the image above is because of a wall in the room where I took the picture, not because of the case itself.]

The frame of the case is poylcarbonate, which provides some basic protection from drops. It’s better for preventing scratches and scuffs on everything except the strategically exposed areas, such as the top and the volume button area.

You can tell from the photo that you’re getting easy button/switch access all around, and that the case is quite thin. What you’re not getting is in any screen protection. The iGlaze Armour doesn’t come with a screen protector, and the edges of the case don’t rise up beyond the screen. This means if you set your phone down on the screen, there’s nothing to prevent contact with the surface. You’ll want to buy a separate screen protector (something like the iVisor XT, perhaps).

Perhaps my favorite design choice with the iGlaze Armour is the wide open bottom.

With this, docking your iPhone while it’s in the case is not a problem, and that’s key. It’s nice that the iGlaze Armour is very easy to take on and off, but it’s better that you’ll rarely have to. On the other hand, the top and bottom edge of the screen size of your iPhone will be exposed to damage.

At $39.95, this isn’t amongst the least expensive cases available to you, but why would you want it to be? The Moshi iGlaze Armour is a very attractive, professional looking case that offers basic protection without adding bulk. Your only real concern with this will be whether it’ll fit your iPhone 5S if you upgrade in the coming months. If you get the iGlaze Armour, you may just not want to.
