The Altego line started late last decade with laptop sleeves, and has now firmly expanded into messenger bags and backpacks designed for the MacBook- and iPad-toting crowd. With a strong focus on individual designs, the company’s products stand out and offer solid features for protecting and carrying your gear. The latest addition is the Polygon Sunfire line, which combines geometric shapes and a bright orange attitude, but in a pleasingly subtle way.

A Place for Everything

The Polygon Sunfire line is composed of a backpack($90) and a messenger bag ($80). Both feature a vaguely trapezoidal design in grey nylon with a bright orange pentagonal pocket on the outside (which does, in fact, look like the leading edge of a sunrise—insert Lion King opening reference [here]). Both designs feature a fleece-lined padded laptop sleeve capable of holding a MacBook Pro (17″ in the backpack or 15″ in the messenger). This sleeve is located on the back of both bags, and the outside features a padded, channeled surface so your MacBook doesn’t bang against your spine.

Inside the bags, there is a fleece-lined sleeve for your iPad, velcro-secured pockets for things like chargers, and a zippered pocket for additional storage. The exteriors of both bags feature a variety of zippered pockets with storage space for cell phones, accessories, and other small items.

Technical Perks

Although offered on both the backpack and messenger, the magnetic closure system Altego calls Fidlock is one of the cooler features for messenger bag carriers. Rather than using snaps, buckles, or velcro, the straps on each bag utilize a magnetic closure. They are super strong, so you can’t pull them directly apart, but a simple lateral slide easily breaks the hold and gets you into the bag. This is especially useful if you’re carrying something bulky or oddly sized, as velcro enclosures are liable to pop open and regular buckles can be difficult to close on a messenger bag.

Check out the full Altego Polygon Sunfire line at their website. You can buy both the backpack and messenger bag directly, but you can also score a discount if you buy from Altego’s authorized Amazon store (and it’s Prime eligible, too!).
