What is it?
The Cave for iOS (also available for Macintosh) is a puzzle adventure game that has you exploring a sentient cave to find what is most important to an eclectic group of seven adventurers, including a scientist, time traveler, and knight in shining armor.
Along the way you’ll have to use each of their special abilities and work together to solve puzzles as you jump, climb, and swim through the cave’s many levels.
How does it work?
You’ll have to do a lot of running around and using items in The Cave, and the controls don’t make that easy or fun to do. Jumping across gaps is done by swiping in that direction, but it’s hit or miss as to whether you’ll actually make it across. If you don’t make a long enough swipe you won’t have enough speed and will fall down. If your swipe is a tad too vertical then you’ll probably just jump straight up. Climbing up ropes and ladders and pushing and pulling items are an exercise in frustration. Fighting the controls made it more difficult to enjoy the story and puzzles.
However I wasn’t all that impressed with the story or puzzles either. The puzzles are rather simplistic and the stories are confusing and not all that interesting. Each of the adventurers has a special ability, but they didn’t make much of an impact. You do need to use all of your adventurers to solve some puzzles, especially since they can only carry one item at a time. You’ll find cave paintings along the way that tell more about the adventurers and what their motivations are.
The Cave itself, being sentient, talks to you, but he didn’t really come across as an effectively snarky narrator.
He mocked me for the decisions I made, but it’s not like I had any choice in the matter.
Is it contagious?
The Cave is an okay puzzle adventure game hampered by mediocre controls, puzzles, and stories.
