screen480x480-2This week on the Free Apps Roundup: Some of the best iOS apps are getting even better with significant updates. RunKeeper can now make use of the M7 coprocessor in the iPhone 5s to track your walking without you even doing anything. That’s right, it all happens in the background. Google has updated their Search app with a ton of very interesting features, including super easy voice searching, notifications, reminders and more. But if it’s a new app you’re looking for, how about Star Wars Tiny Death Star? You’ll have to join the Empire and let the dark side of the Force help guide your business decisions, but that’s just another day on this moon-sized space station. The Jedi are going to feel this one…

The Top Three Free Apps:

  • Star Wars: Tiny Death Star – December 2015 can’t come soon enough, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some Star Wars based fun right now. Amidst a civil war in a galaxy far, far away, the Emperor is building a Death Star level by level, and for some reason needs your help. Do you have any idea how much a moon, er, space station this big costs to build? Summon the dark side of the force to be the business person the Empire needs you to be. Expand the Death Star, hire bitizens to work at your shops, fuel the evil underground business schemes, and, of course, capture rebel spies (kill a few Bothans while you’re at it…just kidding, you can’t do that). And be sure to keep a look out for some of your favorite Star Wars characters as they drop by.
  • RunKeeper – This continues to be one of my favorite apps, thanks in part to how often new features are incorporated. The newest version of RunKeeper has support for the iPhone 5s M7 chip. This means you can track walking activities in the background. They’ve also added a Stride rate chart, improved auto-pause, and AirDrop support for tagging friends on workouts. If you’re a runner, do yourself a favor and download this app already.
  • Google Search – This app just keeps getting better. The latest update make Google Now even better with notifications, reminders, new cards, and Handsfree voice. Now all you have to do to search is say “OK Google” and say what you want to search for. Notifications can tell you when to leave for your next appointment, if a flight is running late and more. Reminders can let you know the next time your favorite musician releases a new album, your favorite celebrities make the headlines, and much more. Basically, this app does it all.

Free Apps:

  • Nike+ Move – Are you a Nike fan? This is the app for you. Not only does it have a Nike logo, it also has support for the M7 chip inside of Apple’s iPhone 5s. What that means for you is that you can convert your movement into NikeFuel, which apparently is the first-ever single, universal unit for measuring all kinds of activities (what are calories burned?). This app will also let you challenge your friends to see who moves more. It knows when, how and where you move.

Free Apps for a Limited Time:

  • ProCam XL – Want to take pictures with your iPad? This app can give you supreme control over your iPad’s camera and settings. It’s not compatible with the iPad Air just yet, but it’s just a matter of time….
  • Zen Sand – Who needs a tiny sandbox and rake when you can solve relaxing logic puzzles with sand? All you have to do is place bamboo stalk to guide flowing sand into vases. Easy!
  • Slender Man Chapter 2: Survive – Haven’t had enough Slender Man? Well, he’s back to see if you can stand the suspense in this 3D survival sequel.
  • AVP: Evolution – The deadliest creatures in the universe face off for the first time on your phone and tablet. Play as both the Alien and Predator in this official game. There are two distinct gaming experiences as you engage in the ultimate battle as both the Alien and Predator. There are tons of upgrades available for your character, abilities, armors and weapons.
  • Asphalt 8: Airborne – Are you ready for dynamic, high-speed aerials stunts in an intense driving experience? This racing game has 47 high performance cars from the top licensed manufacturers that are ready to get airborne in 9 exotic locations.
