Atrio aluminum case for iPhone 5

Minimalist and elegant, the Atrio for iPhone 5/5s isn’t so much a case as an aluminum bumper that combines with a screen protector and a tempered glass back sheet (both included) to provide wraparound protection for  your iPhone. Its understated design detracts very little from the iPhone itself, and and the packaging it comes in is an equally attractive stand.

The bumper is machined, we’re told, from a single block of aluminum. The brushed finish is attractive without being flashy. Inside the top section is a plastic inner shell which covers the power and volume buttons, leaving the volume switch exposed (the bumper leaves the headphone and charger ports and speaker exposed).

The Atrio also comes with two inner shells, one black and one white, which can be switched out, though the black one that came in the bumper had some adhesive that made it tricky to peel out and, in fact, caused a bit of plastic along the volume button to snap. The clear tempered glass sheet slides into the back, leaving the camera lens and flash exposed. It all snaps together easily (even the front protective screen went on with no bumps), sticks together well, and can be removed easily for better access to the headphone port. Small drawback: the mute switch is hard to access if you have very short nails.

I was slightly annoyed by the packaging of the Atrio, which has a plastic cover, mounting, and an aluminum bumper of its own. Why put this much work into something that’s probably going into the trash? Silly me, Craftwork has designed the packaging to work as a stand for the iPhone—the mount holds the iPhone at an angle for video/FaceTime, and the top and bottom work together as a cable organizer. Since the package is hollow, it does provide a little bit of amplification, though it adds echo as well.

The Atrio adds itself to the iPhone 5/5s metallic finish, and with the tempered glass and screen protector hides very little of the design (though the tempered glass picks up fingerprints like crazy). If you’re looking for a stylish bumper that doesn’t draw attention to itself, here it is.

Recommended for those who want a lot of protection while covering as little of their iPhone possible.
