The Karbon SP (“sleek protective”) case for iPhone 5/5s is a two-piece system that provides drop protection with a soft, inner shell made of Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) fitted to an outer hard shell made with Kevlar fibers. The two combine to give your iPhone a carbon fibre look with a non-slip feel.
Putting the case on your phone is easy enough: the TPU part is very flexible and slides on and off easily, covering the power and volume buttons. The mute switch is exposed (and easily accessible even with short fingernails), and the bottom has a mesh cover for the speakers/mic, which, of course, gives you access to the power and headphone ports.
The hard shell snaps easily but firmly to the inner part. If you need to get the iPhone out (or just expose the headphone jack), you can finagle the iPhone out without taking the case apart, even though it’s never in danger of falling out on its own. The tone is a muted black and gray weave (also available in black and red) that doesn’t pick up fingerprints or scratches, and gives the case a satisfying no-slip grip. Because it’s sized to work with the inner shell, the outer part cannot be used as a case on its own.
The Karbon SP feels great in the hand, adding very little to the weight of the iPhone 5, but keeping the volume buttons easy to manipulate even in the pocket. As I mentioned, the mute switch is protected, but easy to reach; when I need to listen to podcasts in the car, it’s relatively easy to peel away a corner of the case without it turning into a wrestling match. I like the muted design (which is functional as well as attractive), and even the company’s logo (located on the lower back) doesn’t call attention to itself.
Recommended for those who want wrap-around drop and scratch protection, but don’t need a waterproof/total environment case.
