China Mobile—the world’s largest carrier with a subscriber base of over 700m—will begin taking iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c pre-orders on Thursday, December 12th at its website and some locations in Shanghai, according to a report from WSJ. The China Mobile website is intiting potential customers to pre-order iPhone 5s and smartphones from other OEMs with the “4G is here” slogan.
The talks between Apple and China Mobile have been going on for months, and Apple CEO Tim Cook even visited China to meet the CEO of China Mobile back in July. It was reported last week by WSJ that both companies struck a deal to sell the iPhone 5s on China Mobile. Later, a China Mobile spokesperson commented that both companies are still negotiating.
Now, the news has been confirmed by a China Mobile phone representative that customers can pre-order the “forward-thinking” iPhone 5S from Thursday, December 12th.
“Customers can begin to preorder for our new 4G services from Dec. 12 through the company’s website and some dedicated branches in Shanghai. But we will only start providing commercial 4G services after Dec. 18,” the customer services operator said.
China Mobile is expected to begin the sales along with the launch of its 4G LTE services at a global partner conference in Guangzhou on Dec. 18, according to its website. That is the day when the carrier is expected to begin selling iPhone 5S.
