Every year since 2011, I have been looking forward to the Zeitgeist feature that Google releases. The company posts a “Year in Review” video which quickly shows the major news stories of the year organized to a catchy and inspirational tune in the background. In addition to this, Google also posted the Top Google Searches 2013 and has ranked the iPhone 5s and iOS 7 very high on the list. The top Google searches are organized in the form of a massive interactive card map that animates when clicked.
The iPhone 5s has been ranked at #3 while iOS 7 has been ranked at #11, surrounded by other popular tech products including the Samsung Galaxy S4 at #4 and the PlayStation 4 at #9. Apple’s iPad Air also made the list, though it was ranked at #68, likely because it was released later than iOS 7 and the iPhone 5s which were both released in late September. Surprisingly, when ranked by “tech gadgets,” most of Apple’s current line-up appeared, including the “iPhone 6″ (which is rumored to be the next iteration of the iPhone expected to be released in Fall 2014).
This is, by far, one of my favorite Google projects, which allows users to see exactly what has been searched for, what is popular, and what captured the headlines throughout the year. Sometimes I forget what happened earlier in the year, and Google Zeitgeist is a gentle reminder of what was most important and what progress our world has made. Apple’s products are part of that progress and show as such in Google’s Top Searches for 2013.
