X-Doria got a couple things right with their Engage case for the iPad Air. It has a textured translucent design that doesn’t completely take over the design of the iPad Air, and it’s cut specifically to accommodate the Apple Smart Cover. Unfortunately, there’s one basic component it didn’t get right at all: the fit.
I’ll start there, because it’s hard to focus on anything else. The Engage was just never able to sit properly on my iPad Air. The right hand edge that covers all but the volume buttons and silencer switch stays put, but the left hand side is mostly left open to provide room for the Apple Smart Cover to connect. As such, only the corners of the Engage are left to hold onto the iPad Air, and they don’t, as you can see in the picture below.
These corners would pop off like this whether the iPad was placed in a book bag or I was using it. In this photo, it popped up just because I set it on the desk for this photo. It’s a shame, really, because I otherwise quite like the design. The textured, translucent design (available in smoke and clear) allows the Apple logo and overall design to show through while hiding the dust and masking the scratches you often see in other clear plastic cases.
We’ve reviewed other X-Doria products here at AppleTell and generally come away quite pleased, so I’m not sure what happened here. But considering the poor fit and lack of drop protection, the Engage iPad Air case is not one we can recommend.
