Having finished all the races in Angry Birds Go before New Year’s Eve, I was left with nothing to play while away time waiting for the clock to strike 12. Then I remembered that Ridge Racer Slipstream had been released a couple of days earlier, so I immediately grabbed it from the App Store and started playing.
Ridge Racer Slipstream is Namco’s attempt in bringing back the glory days of the Ridge Racer franchise. As such, it tries to capture the Ridge Racer environment and made it adapt to the mobile environment. The result? A great arcade racing game.
Playing Ridge Racer Slipstream entails winning races on varying race tracks using various racing cars. There is a total of 10 unique racing venues with 20 courses for you to race on. The game’s 6 Grand Prix Series has a total of 108 racing competitions.
There are two modes in the game—arcade and career mode, the latter being the main course of this game so to speak. There are three types of races in the career mode: time trial, knockout and regular races. Knockout races are the most difficult to beat among the three race types. Hard as it may seem, the key to winning the knockout race or the other two races for that matter entails mastering when to drift and when to straighten out your car. It didn’t take long for me to get accustomed to the drifting techniques in Ridge Racer Slipstream, it just takes the right timing. Incidentally, mastering when to drift and when to straighten up is crucial in winning races, especially since the AI opponents are very hard to beat.
The Ridge Racer franchise is definitely alive and well in this mobile iteration. Namco Bandai has managed to port the glorious Ridge Racer arcade racing experience from others systems onto the mobile platform. Even the graphics of this game stays true to the quality of previous versions.
Fans of Ridge Racer will surely be delighted to play this game in the comfort of their iPad or iPhone, as I did. Now, if only Namco Bandai can fix the occasional crashing and minor bugs of this game, then we will all be happy.
