Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!!! Monster Truck Rally!!! Toni (ech, *cough*, *cough*). Ahem, sorry about that, but monster truck voice can really mess you up. How about we just talk about Monster Jam in a normal voice, eh?
Monster Jam Game—your obligatory app version of the Hot Wheels toy line—puts you behind the wheel of some the most famous monster trucks out there.
Do some freestlyling, race another monster truck, and test your towing capability (although I doubt you would want to take one of these trucks out to haul your fishing boat around). This game has some race elements and points-earning stuff so you can buy new trucks and/or upgrades, but the overall theme is to just have fun driving a monster truck. You can, of course, buy game coins and gears with real money to speed up the upgrade process.
The game controls are a bit odd, however. To move in a race, one might expect a throttle control button and a turn/direction button, but no, you don’t get that. What you get is an arrow on the ground in front of your truck—touch the line and maintain contact ahead of your truck to keep moving. To steer, you need to tilt your iDevice. The result is you may be looking at the world at an odd angle much of the time, which I found a bit disorienting and cumbersome. There are other indicators for time from start, time ahead/behind opponent, repair status, etc.
While the graphics and audio are slick and fairly realistic, the controls lose it for me. The physics are good and there is some challenge to it.
This looks like it should be a fun racer, but the game falls a bit flat. If you are really into the monster truck scene, it may be appealing enough for a test drive. To me, it was more “meh” then “wow.”
