Is Amazon discounting its Kindle Fire HDX because it is threatened by the iPad?

Valentine’s day is just around the corner, and retailers are eyeing yet another opportunity to announced sales after this recent holiday season. Aside from all of the super-expensive flowers you must buy your significant other, you might also be considering a tech product as a gift to give this year.

Although Apple isn’t offering any discounts on its products for Valentine’s day, the company is stilling creating buzz with its iPad Air and second generation iPad mini. Every year, Apple reminds customers that the iPad is a great Valentine’s gift, but doesn’t force the point with sales. As a result, they’re able to maintain a standard for their products that are unmatched in the industry. That is why I was able to sell my old iPhone 3G for over $200 after the iPhone 4S was introduced.

Amazon, on the other hand, has cut the price of its Kindle Fire HDX tablet by $30 to $40 to compete with Apple’s iPad sales. Amazon is selling the base 7″ Kindle Fire HDX  for $30 off of its retail price of $229, bringing its price down to $199. The slightly larger 8.9-inch version of the HDX is gets a discount of $39, bringing its price down to $339 from $379. I think that these sales are great because they help create competition in the market.

However, Amazon has been targeting Apple a lot in recent months, in both its online and TV ads and it truly says a lot about what Amazon is thinking. The company has featured the iPad Air in one of its Superbowl ads, showing how much better the Kindle Fire can be in terms of weight, price, etc. If you’re in the market for a tablet and are looking for a lower cost present for Valentine’s day, I think the Kindle Fire is a great option.

Unless, like myself, you can never cheat on Apple.
