Leonard and his friends may have to all chip-in for a body guard, but if your iPhone needs some BodyGuardz, they’re actually quite affordable. The nice folks at BodyGuardz bring you crystal clear and extra tough screen protectors for your iDevices. The Pure line is available for all recent release iPhones, iPads and iPad minis, as well as some other non-Apple touch screen devices. Today we will be focused on the ScreenGuardz Pure for the iPhone 5s.

Let’s start with a little “what’s in the box?” Open the seal and you will find:

  • 1 envelope with instructions
  • 1 Pure screen protector
  • 1 microfiber cloth
  • 1 alcohol swab
  • 1 squeegee card
  • 1 suction cup
  • 1 registration/FAQ card
  • 2 dust remover stickers
  • 2 home button covers (1 each black and white)
  • 1 BodyGuarz logo sticker

Whew.

The instructions are laid out clearly and simply. The alcohol swab and microfiber cloth do a very good job of preparing the surface of your iPhone for adhesion. The suction cup is included to help you position the Pure carefully before making contact. It’s fairly easy to use, but I found I had a strong urge to see all of the edges before making contact, which is a bit touchy with your hand holding the suction cup. The adhesive is a bit forgiving when the edge touche, so it isn’t really a worry.

Once you have good alignment, let the whole screen guard touch down and watch the show. A gentle touch in the middle of the screen and the adhesive will lowly draw the entire protector into contact with the screen. If there are any bubbles you can use the squeegee card or the microfiber cloth to coax them to the edge

A word of caution, which is also itemized on the installation instructions; if you use the home button cover, you will not be able to use the iPhone 5S fingerprint reader. I left the home button cover off and the fingerprint reader works just fine. The hole in the Pure is sized well, and the thickness of the Pure (a bit less than 1mm) is just enough to get a good read. As for the rest of the touch sensitivity, I have not noticed any reduction in the iPhone’s ability to correctly register touch commands. There are “cut-outs” for the home button and the ear speaker, but not for the front facing camera aperture.  I took some pictures with both cameras and the Pure didn’t interfere in any way. The last performance consideration was how well the Pure stays clean, and on that front I can say the anti-smudge coating does very well indeed.

As always with screen protectors, check the measurements to make sure your iPhone case will still fit with the Pure on the phone. The dimensions are 120 mm x 55 mm x (about) 0.7 mm. The Pure is low profile and some slip on cases will fit fine, but some of the more snug units may have either a hard time slipping on or may pop the Pure off the screen. The old carpenters axiom (slightly modified) applies—measure twice, buy once.

BodyGuardz ScreenGuardz Pure

The BodyGuardz ScreenGuardz Pure retails for $39.95, and if you register your purchase you can make use of the Advantage Program. This program gets you 20% off subsequent purchases and replacement Pure screen guards for a reduced price (only $12.95 for iPhone 5S). When you take into account the performance of the Pure in scratch and impact resistance, the clarity, and the touch sensitivity—not to mention the nice discounts for additional purchases and replacement screen guards (if you actually do some damage to your Pure)—it becomes a very easy decision.

The BodyGuardz ScreenGuardz Pure is an excellent investment, at a very reasonable price, to protect your iPhone.
