Modbook, the company that creates Mac-like tablets, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to support the new Modbook Pro X that is based on the 15-inch Retina Macbook Pro. The $150,000 campaign will enable users to send their own machines to the company so they can be converted for $1,999. Alternatively, for $3,999, customers can make reservations for complete systems coming directly from Modbook.
The campaign states:
An innovative computer modification product, the Modbook Pro X incorporates the original hardware of a Retina-display Apple MacBook Pro 15.4-inch base system running the OS X 10.10 Yosemite operating system. The expansive drawing and writing surface of the Modbook Pro X has a scratch-resistant ForceGlass screen with paper-emulating texture that covers a crisp, clear 15.4-inch Retina display with a resolution of 2,880 by 1,800 pixels. Users get highly sensitive pen input with 2,048 pen pressure levels and pen tilt and rotate functionality for producing pro-quality creative deliverables.
As its price would suggest, the Modbook Pro X seems to be targeting a niche market—one that is interested in a tablet able to run full OS X. It is also for those who would find an OS X-based iPad appealing.
For those who do not wish to back a full Modbook system, they can support the campaign in other ways. There are cheaper rewards available, including the $59 Modbook Digitizer Pen, which just so happens to be compatible with a variety of pen-based tablets. Another is the Modbook Shuttle portable hard drive, which starts at a mere $139.
At press time, the Modbook Pro X has raised just over $25,000 of its $150,000 goal with 37 days left to go in the campaign. For more information or to pledge your support, visit kickstarter.com.
