IK Multimedia’s original iRig MIDI was a great product for iOS users who wanted to quickly add MIDI capabilities to their iOS devices. But it didn’t actually have MIDI connectors built into the device. Instead, it came with a few proprietary MIDI cables that had 1/8 inch connectors on one side for connection. Furthermore, it had an Apple 30 pin connector built right into the device, limiting its uses with newer iOS devices. Obviously, it was begging to be upgraded. Well, that time has come, and IK Multimedia has really delivered in every way on the iRig MIDI 2. They’ve fixed nearly every flaw and made a superb MIDI interface for iOS, Mac, and PC.
The iRig MIDI 2 does away with proprietary MIDI cables. Instead, it has three MIDI connectors built into the body of the device (In, Thru, Out). This allows you to use your own MIDI cables. This also makes it possible for you to buy the length of MIDI cables that make sense for your setup. The only potential drawback is that MIDI connectors are much bigger than 1/8 inch jacks, but the trade-off (if you can even call it that) is well worth it for the much more standard connector. The iRig MIDI 2 is still a very small interface—just about as small as it can be, actually—so I don’t think anyone will complain about size.
After your MIDI devices are connected to the iRig MIDI 2, you’ll need to connect it to your iOS device. That’s the other big change from the original iRig MIDI; there’s no built in 30 pin dock connector to be found here. Instead, you can pick between the two adapter cables that come with the iRig MIDI 2. One is for connecting to an iOS device via Lightning, and one for connecting to a Mac or PC via USB. If you still need a 30 pin connector, you can buy one directly from IK Multimedia. This upgrade is a big deal for a number of reasons. Obviously, many of us have iOS devices that don’t have 30 pin connectors anymore. But also, the original iRig MIDI wasn’t too friendly with cases. The new adapter cables are, so you won’t need to remove your case just to use the iRig MIDI 2. It’s also pretty awesome that this interface works with Mac and PC. Why buy two MIDI interfaces when you can just buy one?
Now that you’re all connected, all you need to do is fire up your favorite MIDI app(s). It’s really that simple. The iRig MIDI 2 is basically plug and play. When the iRig MIDI 2 gets a MIDI command from the MIDI In port, the blue LED above it will illuminate. Similarly, when sending MIDI commands through the Out port, the blue LED about it will illuminate. This is great for making sure everything is connected and working as expected.
In short, the iRig MIDI 2 might just be the perfect MIDI interface. It’s compatible with iOS devices as well as Mac and PC. The three MIDI connectors on the device allow you to use your own MIDI cables to customize your setup to your needs. The new connection method to your device allows iRig MIDI to support multiple platforms (iOS, Mac, and PC). And it’s supremely portable since you can disconnect all the cables and not worry about anything breaking when you throw it in your backpack. What more could you ask for?
