As I mentioned in our iPhone 6 Case Spotlight, I don’t think it’s possible for anyone to have had an iPhone for more than three years and not have used at least one Speck product. They’re consistently amongst the top of the available options, and that’s no different with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, as evidenced by the Speck CandyShell Grip.
I’ll be focusing on the iPhone 6 model in this review, but I imagine my thoughts will apply to both. They also partially apply to the standard CandyShell, the main differences being that the CandyShell Grip comes in fewer color options, is a little bit thicker, and features textured, non-skid/non-slip ridges across the back and edges to provide a better grip. They’re quite effective, and yet don’t really make it harder to slip your iPhone into and out of your pocket unless it’s exceptionally tight.
But you’ve learned by now you shouldn’t be doing that with the iPhone 6, right?
Although the CandyShell Grip is designed to prevent you from dropping it, it provides military standards drop protection, just in case. Its shock-absorbing lining cushions your phone and provides covered access to your sleep/wake and volume buttons, while the hard exterior offers impact and scratch/scuff protection for the back and edges.
The camera and mute switch openings are wide enough for easy access and use, as are the port openings at the bottom. However, because the bottom is covered, you’ll need to remove your iPhone 6 from the CandyShell Grip in order to dock it.
And that, then, takes us to the problem we’re seeing across most of the iPhone 6 cases we’ve reviewed; getting your phone out of the case isn’t as easy as I’d like. The edges rise up over the screen to protect it from surface damage, but curve in far enough to require some extra force to pull them back from the phone. And with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, extra force isn’t a comfortable phrase to use.
On the other hand, the only reason you’d want to remove your iPhone is to dock it, as the CandyShell Grip otherwise gets everything right. It offers great protection, easy port access, responsive button covers, and a secure, comfortable grip. The glossy coating does scratch easily, however, and will highlight fingerprints, depending upon the color you choose. Speaking of that, more color options would be welcome, too.
The combination of these minor drawbacks prevent the CandyShell Grip from getting our first iPhone 6 case A rating, but consider it the strongest B yet.
