A couple days ago, the App Store distribution page showed that only 47% of iDevices are running the latest iOS 8 operating system, stagnant growth compared to the first week which saw 46% adoption. So, there was only a minor increase of one percentage point in two weeks, which is way behind last year’s iOS 7. Many people point towards buggy updates as the major reason for such a low adoption, but it may not be the case for a wider range of users.
It seems the minimum storage space requirement is one of the major reasons why iOS 8 has not seen a similar adoptions as iOS 7, reports John Gruber from Daring Fireball. When iOS was released for existing devices, it required users to have around 5-6GB of free storage space in order to install the update. The issue received its fair share of attention since it was a problem for those using the 16GB version of the handset. Gruber further mentions that Apple needs to find a way to make the required storage space a little less so users can easily install the update over-the-air, without having to first delete their important files.
It would be a bigger problem for those rocking the 8GB version of the iPhone’s previous models since they must delete almost everything from their device in order to make room for the new update, or perform the update via iTunes.
If Apple can’t make the initial install requirements lower, they should have bumped the storage space to 32GB for the base model so users can have enough space to store their data. After iOS 8, users are left with almost 12GB of space, which gets filled in no time.

Have nice 16 gig iPad Air and of course cannot up date because of storage requirement. What a real fist shake to apple on this.

There is also not much of a “killer reason/feature” to inspire me to upgrade. Security updates? Like my iPhone hasn’t been rooted by the feds or other criminals since the day I got it…
