While war in general may not be great, there was one called The Great War. Now you can play it on your iPhone, as Sprit of War: The Great War puts WWI in the palm of your hand.
What is it?
This game renders WWI equipment and tactics on a hex grid for a board game feel with some nice graphics. Consider carefully and place your troops, build new units, and deploy your artillery to vanquish your foe. By the way, you get to choose your side: Triple Entente or Triple Alliance.
How does it work?
The pace of the game play is a bit slower than expected, but not too bad. The hex system and visuals make Spirit of War: The Great War feel like a board game, but without all that “put your stuff away” you might get from certain family members.
The game controls consist of a simple series of taps: select a unit, perform an action, move to a location, etc. Once you select a unit you get a handy set of options laid out in a ring configuration which is easy to use even on the small iPhone/iPod Touch screens.
Is it contagious?
If you like strategy games, Spirit of War: The Great War will provide some challenge. There is plenty of play time, and it looks good while you do it. The pacing is a bit slow and the random number generator used to score hits seems to favor the AI (no sour grapes there, eh?) but it’s a good play.
Besides, while a level is loading you get some history of what happened (the actual history surrounding WWI), so it’s also a win on the “I learned something” front.
