Ars Technica is now claiming that Apple will indeed introduce new iPods on 5th September, according to their “sources within the company” (whatever that means). This is supposed to coincide with the long weekend, but defers slightly from AppleInsider’s report, which claims the event will take place sometime in mid- to late-September.
I find this hard to believe because the company unveiled the new iMacs and iLife/iWork ’08 at a special event very recently. It would make more sense to spread these events out; but then again, its been ages since Apple has updated the iPod, all thanks to the iPhone. Four different models are expected, mostly based on the current line-up.

I think, at this point, there's not even any real doubt it's for new ipods: http://thenewsroom.com/details/662166?c_id=wom-bc-js
I totally agree. It should be interesting, and a good time for Apple to release them since a lot of kids, teens, and college students are heading back to school.
