Some more details slipped today about the (so-called) iPhone unlocking phenom that is iPhoneSimFree. The software apparently allows you to unlock your iPhone so it will work on any GSM carrier, including those in Europe and Canada. The other confirmed alternative to unlock your iPhone is by using a hardware hack.
iPhoneSimFree is not looking like such a viable alternative today as they announced they will not be selling their software to end users. But only in bulk to resellers. Now, this wouldn’t be a problem, but these resellers are likely to only sell unlocked phones, not the software itself.
To add insult to injury, iPhoneSimFree is not guaranteeing that this software hack will work when Apple releases their next software update. So sinking mega bucks into an unlocked phone may backfire the day after you buy it when Apple releases an update.
Looks like we’ll just have to wait for Apple to release the iPhone in these countries. But if you’re willing to risk it, you can pick up 50 licenses for $36 each.

I think you are buying into the bandwagon a bit here.
Sure it sucks that they don't guarantee that they will get your iPhone working if Apple releases an update but that is because they can't, not in a forseeable future atleast. They however do say that they will do everything they can to fix the problem. (otherwise they will be out of business)
Secondly, sure it might backfire and your iPhone maybe stops working but anyone who is willing to modify their iPhone also knows the risk of it, its not a two minute hack.
I know it will be patched in the next apple update. I think it's likely Apple will purchase this hack, and then patch around it.
Plus, Apple will probably include something like a chat client in the update, or something worthwhile to make you update.
