The IEEE 1394 Trade Association has announced that the next version of Firewire will climb to quadruple the speed of today’s FireWire, to 3.2 Gbps (Gigabits per Second), a transfer speed of 400 Megabytes per second.
The new technology will use the same connectors as the current Firewire 800 (800 Mbps,100 Megabytes per second) standard, but have the much increased data transfer.
In theory, the new Firewire, named S3200, will at first be used for fast storage, with computers and cameras adapting the protocol over time.
Apple Computer invented Firewire in 1986, and today is still the only computer manufacturer to include FireWire 800 as a standard feature on some systems, though FireWire 400 is much more prevalent industry wide.
