Apple makes really great products–most of the time. The odd time, Apple makes a product that nobody wants, and then Steve Jobs quietly kills it. That was the fate of the iPod Hifi. The iPod Hifi was Apple’s iPod Boombox, priced heavily at $350. It was no surprise that the Hifi wasn’t selling well, and as of the September 5th Apple event, the iPod Hifi mysteriously disappeared from the Apple Online Store and Apple retail stores. But according to this patent filing, Apple may be working on a better version of the iPod Hifi.
The patent is labeled as “iPod Boombox”, but it is very similar to the design of the original iPod Hifi. While it may look almost the same (as most rectangles do), the new iPod Hifi would sport a Dock on top for your iPod/iPhone, as well as an Apple remote, an indicator status, and possibly even an LCD. It definitly looks promising. If Apple could get it out there with a lower price point, it would almost definitely be a hit. now, if only they would put Wifi in it.
