iPodThe age group of users you’d least suspect is are the most popular buyers of music from the Apple iTunes Store. This age group is the 9 – 14 year olds (Me!). Being a 13 year old who is highly against illegal music downloading, I was very surprised to read this report by NPD Group. Kids my age tend to not buy music, because if something is free, they’ll naturally take it. As a tech savvy person who follows news, I’ve heard about lawsuits from illegal music downloading and I know why this is bad. Educating young kids about this matter is the number one things I recommend doing. Going into specs of the report:

  • 70 percent of users 9 to 14 use legal methods to download music
  • iTunes accounts for 49 percent of the 70 perecent of legal downloads
  • LimeWire holds 26 percent of the music-download marketshare
  • MySpace holds 16 percent of the music-download marketshare

Out of the 3 mentioned music download services, it shows that if you offer good quality music, or anything for that means people will use the best method. iTunes is the best, where MySpace is downright the worst. The Recording Acamedy says it “plans to continue its work to educate the public on the effects that digital music has on artists and the people that work behind the scenes making the music.” We can only see a rise in the use of iTunes in the future after viewing this report.
