Pearl Research has released data from a recent survey in China showing that a staggering 68% of respondents have heard about the iPhone. China, containing over 565 million mobile phone users, has not officially received the iPhone via Apple yet, but is known to have many of the devices (hacks or knock offs, of course) despite this. However, even after the iPhone arrives in China, there will still be one problem according to this survey, price. Using the $500 figure, Pearl Research found that this price tag was the most common reason people lost interest in buying the device, but they didn’t give an exact percent for this question. On top of this price, Chinese mobile data plans are also known to be quite expensive, causing the Chinese to look to other features to enjoy on the device besides the great mobile browsing experience.
Another quite interesting fact reported in the article is that 88% of the existing iPod owners surveyed were interested in the iPhone. Apple has been known for the halo effect of its super successful MP3 player, the iPod, on its other products so this number doesn’t especially surprise us. With rumors of a 3G iPhone right around the corner, let’s hope Apple and China Mobile can reach an agreement this time and help out our fellow Chinese iPhone fans.
