fring logoAn awesome VoIP client known as “fring” that was previously only available for PCs and other mobile phones has now been released for Apple’s iPhone (and iPod touch). Of course, only jailbroken iPhones will be able to run the unofficial third-party application, and its VoIP capabilities are only available over a WiFi network.

The developer of fring is labeling it as a “light, sneak preview R&D version” so it appears that they are only testing the functionality and observing the popularity of the application on jailbroken iPhones and iPod touches before the application is officially released once the iPhone 2.0 software update goes public.

The iPhone version of fring delivers all the great features found in the S60 and Windows Mobile versions, such as free and low cost VoIP calls, and Twitter and instant messaging capabilities through Google Talk, MSN Messenger, Skype, ICQ, Yahoo! Messenger, and AIM. You can check out the fring blog for more info too.

Visit the fringcubator web site to check out this free preview version of fring on your iPhone or iPod touch. Instructions are given on how to install the application on your device using Installer.app. Having tested the app myself, I must say that although it is pretty basic at the moment, it has much potential to grow, and should be an amazing app by the time it is released officially for the iPhone and iPod touch.
