According to an Apple Insider report, Apple is seriously considering a plan to offer sales of 3G iPhones to faculty and students through many universities. Sources close to the matter report that Apple’s execs are developing a plan with which to implement sales of the new 3G iPhone through on-campus stores and other educational resellers. The 3G iPhone services would be first opened at a select number of universities that already have large accounts with Apple, and then more schools would be added from there.
This is only the second effort by Apple to widen the area through which people can get an Apple product; the first happening when Apple authorized Best Buy to sell Apple products. Since Apple has realized how many phones were being bought, cracked and sold on the gray market, they have restricted sales and activations of iPhones to certified Apple Stores only. Through “iPhone University,” the iPhone has already gotten its place in the campuses of Harvard, MIT and Stanford. But with this new plan from Apple, they hope to extend their reach even further.
Also in the plan was an extension of iTunes U, through which users could get class notes and materials, find their professors’ offices, and other items associated with college life.
It seems as though Apple isn’t satisfied with the fact that it has recently surpassed Dell in terms of computers sold for educational purposes.
