Some interesting facts and details about the 3G iPhone surfaced recently after an AT&T internal e-mail made it into the wild. This e-mail was mostly about AT&T’s side of the iPhone, covering the plans, activation, etc. The Boy Genius Report has the whole e-mail posted on their site, but here are some of the highlights:
- Return period has been changed from 14 days to 30 days.
- First gen iPhone data rate plans will remain available for the first gen device until further notice, and the new iPhone 3G data plan is $30/month with unlimited data and visual voicemail.
- iPhone 3G will be activated at point of sale when the device is purchased in store.
- AT&T is working with Apple to roll out GPS-enabled applications.
- Device purchase limit remains at three per customer in AT&T stores.
Without being able to activate iPhones via iTunes anymore it makes me wonder what is going to happen on launch day. With hundreds of people who will need to change their plans or make new ones, the line and wait are going to be huge. Hopefully, Apple and AT&T have a solution for that if it is, in fact, true that iTunes will no longer be able to activate the phone. Do any of these highlighted points have you rethinking your 3G iPhone purchase?

I'm wondering how they'll handle gifts. How do you give someone an iPhone for a gift if you have to activate it at the store? Hopefully, you'll be able to buy it, take it home to give to the recipient, then let him go back and activate it on his own. If you actually do have to activate it right when you buy it…well, no more iPhones under the Christmas tree.
