Looking for a replacement for your desktop computer? According to SFGate.com, you need look no further than the MacBook Pro.
Of the four computers listed in their article, the Apple MacBook Pro 2008 scores the highest as a desktop computer replacement, receiving an 8.2 out of 10 Cnet rating. The Acer Aspire 8920-6671 and Gateway P-6860FX both received 8 out of 10 with the HP Pavilion dv9700t coming in at 7.9 out of 10.
The MacBook Pro received positive marks for the Penryn-class Intel CPU, the improved battery life, and the touch-pad gestures from the MacBook Air, while being docked for it small performance premium over the cheaper 13-inch MacBook, the limited tech support and the lack of an SD card reader. And apparently, the high rating doesn’t come at a price. At $2,500, the MacBook Pro is more expensive than only the Gateway system which costs $1,350. The Acer and HP systems are $2,600 and $3,000, respectively.
Now, this is all well and good, but you can have my iMac when you pry it from cold…well, not dead, but certainly reluctant hands. Portability’s fine, but I like my big screen, I like my detached keyboard, and I like the much, much lower price. Yes, I know, I can get an external keyboard and a separate monitor, but that’s yet more money, and it kind of defeats the whole purpose of portability, you know.
How about you? Knowing the MacBook Pro scores so highly, would you consider making the switch from your desktop world?

I have in fact already made the switch, opting for the extra monitor (32 inch) and Apple's wireless keyboard and mighty mouse to go with my MacBook Pro. When I need to take it around its a simple case of taking out the VGA cable. I wouldn't mind having an imac as well as my notebook but at the moment the solution i have is great.
I've been using my MacBook Pro (and before it, a PowerBook G4) as my primary system. It's more convenient, so I can take it with me when I travel. I'm thinking of making it my desktop system with a big external monitor and getting a MacBook for travel, since it's lighter & smaller.
No laptop is going to replace my Mac Pro. Why give up the power and speed for portability!??!
I'm with you, Tim. I've just got a lowly iMac, and although portability is occasionally handy, for me, it just doesn't justify the premium price over what you get with a desktop machine.
Of course, it'd be nice to have both…
