Neil Young, who has worked at Electronic Arts for 11 years, has officially left his position at EA and is moving on to create an iPhone publishing company he calls Ngmoco. If you ask me, this is a smart move for Neil, and I’m sure he has plenty of money to spend towards making it work. According to an interview with him at Gamasutra, Neil finds the iPhone so attractive because “…more than half the time the average iPhone is in use, it’s being used for something other than making a telephone call.” That opens a huge market for developers.
As far as the actual gaming aspect of the iPhone goes, Neil said in his interview, “The iPhone, from a performance standpoint, is pretty close to a PSP, but unlike the PSP, it’s got a touchscreen, accelerometers, a camera, it’s location-aware, it’s got all of your media on it, it’s awake with you, it’s always on, and it’s always connected to the network.” It sounds like Mr. Young really knows what he’s talking about, and has his mind set on making this company work. I look forward to seeing what he can create with his expertise and wish him luck in his efforts. This sort of move really shows how big the iPhone is going to be with the SDK.
