iPhone Firmware WishlistThe iPhone is a great phone. I don’t think many people will disagree with that. But that doesn’t mean it’s perfect; far from it. There are still many features missing, and some things that are just wrong. Thankfully, Apple has the ability to add and fix many of the things we all want to see through a firmware update. While reading Gizmodo’s wishlist for the firmware 2.1 update currently in beta, I thought about the features I’d like to see in coming software updates.

Gizmodo has all of the most requested features and fixes on their lists. Things like less crashes, speeding up programs, video recording, wireless syncing, and, of course, copy and paste. But I’ve got a couple more features I’d like to see..

  1. Better GPS functionality – I’d like to see a way of recording my location, and syncing it with photos that I’ve taken with a different camera in iPhoto. Pictures could sync with iPhoto, and then take the location data from the iPhone and automatically geotag them based upon matching time codes.
  2. Better Bluetooth functionality – I want to be able to use a pair of stereo bluetooth headphones with my iPhone. An iPhone plus a bluetooth keyboard could be a killer ultra portable setup. And, with bluetooth, you could add GPS to the original iPhone.

That’s all I have right now to add to Gizmodo’s list. What else would you like to see in coming firmware updates?

  1. Simple business functions are missing:

    1. Dial a con call from a calendar invite – can't be done as Apple made all calendar info unelectable

    2. Copy/Paste – ever get an email from someone with their contact info in the signature? – it would be nice to cut and paste it to a new contact

    3. Organize contacts – everything is by person name, but how about if I know my supplier is AcmeCorp, but i forget the sales drone's name? Outlook lets me list as AcmeCorp first, then name.

    4. Fix email fetch – even when set to manual, the mere act of entering inbox, starts a sync. Oh, and it does this for all accounts, even if they are all set to manual. If you have Exchange, then entering the trash folder starts a sync with that.

    5. Calendar and Contact sync – add a manual button, or some feedback that they are syncing with Exchange

    6. VPN – add some ability to launch the VPN from another program – example: check email. Tie an email account to VPN so when I go to check email, it launches the VPN if they are linked.

I love the iPhone, but I really thought that Exchange integration would be solid.. it feels more like a beta build and rush to get it out the door.
