iPhone Nike + appI’ve been jealous of the iPod nano’s ability to use the Nike + kit for some time now. Currently, the iPhone can’t use the peripheral that tracks your runs. But according to iphone.fr, an app is being developed to make use of the Nike + on the iPhone (and presumably the iPod touch), and will possibly cure my jealousy.

iphone.fr has some great leaked photos of the rumored application that look pretty tempting. Many more features are available straight from the app than are offered on the iPod nano. For instance, you can track your goals and progress with the app. It offers some great looking graphs, and keeps track of a lot of details.

Check it out after the break.

iPhone Nike + appWorkout information is stored for review. Things such as time, distance and calories are all available at a tap. You can set goals and review your previous workout data to keep on track towards those goals.

It even has access to maps. It’s unclear just how functional this will be, but the screenshot sparks a lot of ideas in my head. I’d love to be able to map my runs before I leave, or have it track where I actually ran in real time. Keeping a record of my running routes would be awesome.

iPhone Nike + appThere are only two real issues I have with this app. The concept is great, but I don’t really want to run with my iPhone. It’s just a little too big and too expensive for me to keep on my arm while running. But even if I did want to run with it, does this app require the iPhone to be awake the entire time you are running? That sounds like a real drain on the battery.

One last idea. If you have an iPhone 3G, do you really need to buy the Nike + unit? It might be profitable for them to charge a small fee for the program for iPhone 3G users, since they already have access to GPS, which could keep track of all the necessary information relating to running.

Are you excited for this app? Would it cause you to buy a Nike +? Would you rather run with an iPhone and this app over an iPod Nano?
