Though it’s less applicable now that Apple is offering free MagSafe replacements, Southern Mac Refurbishing has put together a product that might prevent you from ever having to get a replacement.
The MagSaver was created when the company was asked to repair several thousand MagSafes. Along the way, they developed this product so they hopefully wouldn’t have to do it again. It’s just a small piece of plastic that you place over head of the MagSafe, and then snake the cord around two small posts. This prevents tension on the cord that may cause it to fray. Then, you snap the top cover on, and MagSaver has saved your MagSafe.
Three minor downsides to the product: First, once it’s on, it’s on. If you take it off, you essentially break it as it uses pins instead of screws to go together. Second is the fact that the MagSaver makes the plug larger, and thus more difficult to attach back to itself when wrapped up. Third is the price. The little piece of plastic costs $14 USD.
The MagSaver works with MacBook and MacBook Pro adapters, but not the MacBook Air.
