While the release of the 2.1 OS for iPhone has met with general praise, some users are reporting problems, including decreased battery life, inability to install the update, and the dreaded “bricking” of the iPhone. Fortunately, there are some fixes you can try, and iPhone Atlas has collected them.
Some of the fixes require you to download the standalone updater and restore your iPhone, using a backup, which brings up another problem, though:
You then have to restore the iPhone’s firmware, all your settings, all your media, and all your Apps. During this process, you are offered an attempt to recover your iPhone from a backup. Unfortunately, backups are just as bug ridden and very unreliable. Users may encounter an error message indicating that a previously valid backup is corrupt.
Be sure to check the article for relevant links to the software you’ll need and other detailed instructions.
But, it’s not all doom and gloom, as the majority of users are experiencing a definite boost to the popular device:
“Just updated & surprise surprise everything is working really well. Only been upgraded for about an hour but texting and opening programmes etc is working much quicker. Great. Let’s see if any calls drop tomorrow. Well done Apple.”

my battery definately improved about 20%!!
My battery life dropped dramatically with the 2.1 install! I am having to recharge midday to make it through the afternoon. Before upgrade, battery life was good. Of course I am not using 'location','3g', and making sure all apps are dead. I've tried all the traditional fixes, but nothing is working.
2.1 made scrolling through my contacts list seem much quicker at first but after a day or so it seems to have slowed down again but not quite as much.
Unfortunately, after applying the update I get many more dropped calls, inability to send text msgs at times, and safari still crashes too frequently. Battery life hasn't changed noticeably for me. My usage habits haven't changed.
And what is that little blue circle that occasionally replaces the 3G/Edge logo at the top-left corner there? Never saw that prior to installing update.
