Ever since Apple acquired PA Semi back in April, rumors have been flying about what Apple had in mind for its newly acquired engineers. For a long time, it has been speculated that Apple eventually planned to make its own iPod and iPhone chips. Well, according to recently revealed information, it seems as though that is, in fact, the case.
According to the LinkedIn profile of Wei-Han Lien, a PA Semi engineer now working for Apple, the company is in fact making its own variation of the Advanced RISC Machine Architecture Processor (very low power chips used in the majority of mobile devices, including the iPod and iPhone) for at least the iPhone. In his profile, Lien states that he is currently the “ARM CPU architecture team for iPhone.”
Apple currently uses multiple ARM processors in the iPhone, but it seems as though they may be making a move to make a good chip even better, and all the while, keep things closer to home. Making their chips in-house will reduce the chances of external input and leaks, which, as Steve stated at the Let’s Rock event, “… just isn’t funny.”
