October 14th Apple MacBook EventIt’s about 7:15 a.m. out here on the east coast, which puts us just under six hours away from Apple’s announcement of the new MacBooks. Never too early to get ready for some new MacBooks, though, right? Stick with us here at Appletell, as we’ll be providing ongoing coverage leading up to the event, and will offer a live blog of the announcements from this very spot.

6:06 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Those crazy Brits. That wraps it up. Thanks for joining us, and be sure to check back with us throughout the day for detailed coverage on all the new products (as well as we didn’t get, I’m sure).

6:06 pm technobot said:

Also, “Jony” Ive has a thing for aluminum. Or Aluminium, as he would call it, being British and all.

6:05 pm technobot said:

So to wrap up: Macbooks: white still available at 9, new Macbooks with graphics cards at 99 and 99, Macbook pros with TWO graphics cards, no Firewire 400, and SSDs for all!

6:04 pm technobot said:

And we out!

6:04 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Again, the tech geeks are going to torch the whole village.

6:04 pm technobot said:

Deflecting rumors about netbooks and touch screens.

6:04 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Oh, and the mythical iTablet? Apple has “experimented” on it, but feels it doesn’t yet make much sense.

6:03 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Check out our detailed coverage of the new MacBook Pro complete with images.

6:02 pm technobot said:

Theyr’e counting on more light from the backlit LED display to counter the glossy nature of the glass display

6:01 pm technobot said:

No big change in weight: MBP: 5.5, MB: 4.5

6:00 pm Kirk Hiner said:

I wonder if the white MacBook is smaller, or retains its previous weight and dimensions.

6:00 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Everything’s smaller, by the way. Macbook goes from 1.08 inches to 0.95. Pro goes from 1 inch to .95.

6:00 pm technobot said:

17″ MBP getting refreshed as well.

5:59 pm technobot said:

They’re not worried about the Macbook cannibalizing the Macbook pro sales

5:59 pm technobot said:

Phil promotes the DVI connector over HDMI

5:58 pm Kirk Hiner said:

That won’t go over well with the tech geeks.

5:58 pm technobot said:

Plus, they’d rather you buy HD from the Apple store wirelessly

5:57 pm technobot said:

No Blu-ray in the near future. Too much trouble to license.

5:57 pm technobot said:

Apple may have the nvidia card locked in for a while
not exclusive, but they’re ordering a lot

5:54 pm technobot said:

wow, a Q&A with Steve, Phil, and Tim

5:53 pm technobot said:

Steve’s blood pressure is apparently fine. And that’s all there is to say about that.

5:53 pm technobot said:

More about the environment. It must be hard to be Apple and be constantly criticized for that, since they’re basically the cuddliest computer company around. Michael Dell could squeeze a panda into his powerplant, and no one would bat an eye.

5:51 pm technobot said:

did anyone hear when the Macbook is available?

5:51 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Need for Speed on the MacBook. I’m weeping over here. I’m weeping like school child.

5:50 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Seriously, though, that glass to edge monitor is fantastic.

5:49 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Turning the brick into a computer shell is an interesting procedure…provided you find such procedures interesting.

5:49 pm technobot said:

Perhaps with two British chipmunks running around, looking for their tree.

5:48 pm technobot said:

“A trip through the powerhouse” should be playing here.

5:47 pm Kirk Hiner said:

More on the “brick” now. Or “block.” Or “chunk of aluminum.” Whatever you want to call it.

5:47 pm Kirk Hiner said:

And they’re not even the good ones.

5:47 pm technobot said:

SSD option on Macbook Family

5:47 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Has Steve even ever heard a band? Because he seems to think that only three exist.

5:46 pm technobot said:
5:45 pm Kirk Hiner said:

MacBooks will ship tomorrow. No talk of Blu-ray, not even as BTO.

5:44 pm technobot said:

Okay, so it looks like they’re keeping the white plastic Macbook at 9, but the new metal one (with the graphics card) is 99 and 99

5:44 pm Kirk Hiner said:

9 is white, ,299 is aluminum.

5:44 pm technobot said:

No more black Macbook?

5:43 pm Kirk Hiner said:

I’ll take the ,299 price tag. Where do I place my order?

5:42 pm Kirk Hiner said:

He needs to play down the eco angle, but Greenpeace will still find a way to hate it.

5:42 pm technobot said:

This one gets a gold medal for “greeness”

5:42 pm technobot said:

More on the eco-friendly angle. Also, Steve Jobs hates me.

5:41 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Five times the graphics performance.

5:41 pm Kirk Hiner said:

NVIDIA 9400M chipset.

5:41 pm technobot said:

NVIDIA 9400M chipset in the Macbook! AAAAAAAAARghg!

5:41 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Nvidia!

5:40 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Eliminates 60% of the major structural parts. Glass trackpad.

5:40 pm technobot said:

It’s a baby Macbook Pro, down to the glass trackpad

5:40 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Glass to corner = sweet.

5:40 pm technobot said:

Metal enclosure

5:39 pm Kirk Hiner said:

MacBook is best selling Mac ever? Even better than the Quadra?

5:39 pm technobot said:

LED backlit display in Macbook, along with faster graphics.

5:39 pm Kirk Hiner said:

1920×1200 pixel resolution. The usual stuff, otherwise. camera, USB hub, speakers, etc.

5:39 pm technobot said:

Macbook now 9

5:38 pm Kirk Hiner said:

24″ LED backlit monitor for 9 in November.

5:38 pm technobot said:

MacBook is the best selling Mac ever

5:38 pm technobot said:

Oh.

5:37 pm technobot said:

I can’t imagine they’d close with a Macbook… are we going to get nooged?

5:37 pm technobot said:

Macbook Air in November

5:37 pm technobot said:

That’s one big flash drive.

5:36 pm Kirk Hiner said:

MacBook Air gets 9400M. Slower than in the MacBook Pro but still 4 times faster than the current Air. Also, 120GB hard and optional 128GB SSD. 99 or 99 with faster processor and the SSD option.

5:35 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Second model: 99, with the usual upgrades: faster processor, more ram, larger hard drive.

5:34 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Two models: 99, 15.4 in, 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, Both graphics chipsets, 250GB hard drive, slot loading super drive.

5:34 pm technobot said:

Two models, both shipping today

5:33 pm technobot said:

Man, Apple’s security sucks lately.

5:33 pm technobot said:

And it looks like the hard drive is going to be even easier to take out.

5:32 pm Kirk Hiner said:

The other graphics card by the way, is the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M.

5:32 pm technobot said:

analog and optical digital on the audio side

5:32 pm technobot said:

Mini port replaces full DVI out

5:31 pm technobot said:

No firewire 400 on the Pro

5:31 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Take your pick: performance or battery life. Will even one get in the MacBook?

5:31 pm technobot said:

9600M GT: 32 parallel graphics cores, 120 Gigaflops and 512MB video memory

5:30 pm technobot said:

Whoa whoa whoa… two graphics cards?

5:30 pm technobot said:

Upgrade available for the Nvidia card… Not sure at thsi point if either is going to be in the Macbook.

5:29 pm technobot said:

More graphics card news

5:29 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Because I totally forgot my offering envelope.

5:28 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Is this the alumnium frame Steve’s passing around, or are we supposed to be tithing?

5:27 pm technobot said:

Individual holes for keys in the keyboard.

5:26 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Remember, everyone, you can add your own thoughts in the comments below. Let us know what you love/hate so we can aim our post conference coverage to what you want to see.

5:26 pm technobot said:

Frame has half the structural parts of the old Macbook Pro

5:25 pm Kirk Hiner said:

The new unibody uses half the parts and is stronger.

5:25 pm technobot said:

Macbook pro now has a magnetic latch like the macbook.

5:24 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Backlit display = nice.

5:24 pm technobot said:

All connectors on one side?

5:23 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Optical drive now on the side.

5:23 pm Kirk Hiner said:

New MacBook Pro is up next.

5:23 pm technobot said:

Yep, you can now pinch and rotate on the trackpad.

5:22 pm technobot said:

39% larger trackpad, supports gestures, including a new 4 finger gesture (make your own joke)

5:22 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Four-finger gestures!

5:22 pm technobot said:

No button? Aw sheeeeeeeeeyit.

5:21 pm technobot said:

Steve’s comparing the graphics card to Intel integrated graphics, so I guess that’s a confirmation that it’s going to be in the Macbook.

5:21 pm Kirk Hiner said:

The entire glass pad is the button.

5:21 pm Kirk Hiner said:

But now, we’re talking trackpads. Glass multitouch trackpads, to be exact.

5:21 pm technobot said:

Glass trackpad!

5:20 pm Kirk Hiner said:

I’ve been waiting over a year for a real chip.

5:20 pm technobot said:

16 parallel graphics cores, 54 gigaflops graphics card.

5:20 pm technobot said:

If they’re putting this sucker in the Macbook, I’m going to be cheesed since I just bought one.

5:20 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Oh please, God, put it in the MacBook!

5:19 pm technobot said:

Nvidia GeForce 9400M

5:19 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Okay, I’m back on track. The new MacBook Air is built from a 2.5 pound piece of aluminum, but the end structure will be only 0.5 pounds.

5:19 pm technobot said:

Steve’s talking about Nvidia

5:18 pm technobot said:

God knows we love Ive, but that could have used a bit more snap.

5:16 pm technobot said:

Instead of building pieces into the shell, they carved the Macbook Air from one large piece.

5:15 pm Kirk Hiner said:

The new system is “strong” and “robust.” The internal frame supports the system.

5:15 pm technobot said:

That’s the old way.

5:14 pm technobot said:

Outer shell supports an inner frame.

5:14 pm Kirk Hiner said:

That’s the old method, anyway. I imagine the new method will be easier to blog about.

5:13 pm technobot said:

I think we’re about to get Brick’d

5:13 pm Kirk Hiner said:

He’s detailing how the new laptops are built. Hard to cover here. We’ll offer details after the blog. Lot of talk of aluminum and magnesium and frame strength.

5:12 pm technobot said:

Now he’s “Jony” Ive?

5:11 pm technobot said:

Laptops at universities at 39%. Beating dell.

5:11 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Well, Jobs was back. Ive will discuss the “brick” method.

5:10 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Jobs is back to discuss a new way to build laptops.

5:10 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Three quarters into 2008 equals all of 2007′s sales. And in this economy!

5:09 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Some go to factcheck.org and see if that’s right. If so, SWEET!

5:09 pm technobot said:

US retail marketshare is 17.6%!? Holy crap!

5:08 pm technobot said:

400k visitors to Mac Stores each day (around the world, presumably)

5:07 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Mac has outgrown the market for four years straight.

5:07 pm Kirk Hiner said:

I liked the one with that angry caveman. Was that Apple?

5:07 pm technobot said:

Tim Cook: 50% of Mac sales are to first-time Mac buyers

5:06 pm technobot said:

Personally I preferred the “pizza box” ad.

5:05 pm technobot said:

The “throne” ad.

5:05 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Apple ads. They made PC users into stereotypes, you know. So unfair.

5:04 pm technobot said:

Trashing Vista is the cat running into the door of the tech industry. You never get tired of it.

5:04 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Note to readers…we’ll bypass the iWork hyperbole and start reporting when the meat is served.

5:03 pm Kirk Hiner said:

And get this…the Apple guys say their laptops are “far superior to anything else.” Weird that they should feel that way.

5:02 pm technobot said:

apple sold 2.5 million laptops last quarter.

5:01 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Today’s news is about notebooks. Specifically, Steve’s Hello Kitty notebook, in which he wrote “I heart Ballmer” about a million times.

5:01 pm technobot said:

Tim always gets the suck jobs.

5:01 pm technobot said:

Tim Cook is schooling us on the history of mac notebooks

5:00 pm technobot said:

Steve!

5:00 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Hello, Steve!

4:59 pm Kirk Hiner said:

They’re re-upping Mac OS Classic, then? Odd choice, but it’ll make playing Deus Ex on my Intel Core Duo easier.

4:57 pm technobot said:

Classical music? Oooookay.

4:56 pm Kirk Hiner said:

I just sat on my keys. I hate that!

4:56 pm technobot said:

Okay, we’re all here, can we just start already?

4:54 pm Kirk Hiner said:

This is about MacBooks? Damn. I’m going home.

4:53 pm technobot said:

Well, that was iPods. I mean, what sort of person cares about MacBooks, really?

4:53 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Where was he, anyway, this time. Surprisingly quiet, since his accuracy last time led me to believe he was hiding in Steve’s closet for a month before “Let’s Rock.”

4:52 pm Kirk Hiner said:

That Digg creator guy already shot that one down.

4:51 pm technobot said:

I am really hoping for an update to ColorSync today.

4:51 pm Kirk Hiner said:

But Joe Jackson tends to wear shoes. How long does it take a quick change artist to get shoes on/off?

4:48 pm technobot said:

It’s like one has to leave seconds before the other one is due to show up.

4:48 pm technobot said:

You notice how you never see Jack Johnson and Joe Jackson in the same room at the same time?

4:45 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Of course, you’re all welcome to post your comments down below. Let us know how you feel about Jack Johnson. Or Joe Jackson. Or MacBooks. Whatever.

4:45 pm technobot said:

How about “Joe Jackson?”

4:42 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Words I don’t want to hear today: “And now, the spotlight turns to Jack Johnson.”

4:37 pm technobot said:

Steve should really do one of those slow-walk-to-the-stage things like Eddie Murphy.

4:25 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Keynotes should have opening acts, like concerts. Bare Bones or Freeverse could come out and make a few announcements before Apple takes the stage.

3:50 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Just about an hour to go. Hurry and get your MacBook on ebay and get it sold within an hour before the resale value drops.

3:26 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Even at this late hour, more MacBook rumors are surfacing.

2:46 pm technobot said:

Remember to drink when you hear “maverick.”

2:45 pm technobot said:

The fine folks at Gizmodo have a bingo card for the event.

2:45 pm Kirk Hiner said:

Apple’s online store is down.

2:05 pm technobot said:

Two, two, can I get more on the monitor? Two, two…

11:47 am Kirk Hiner said:

We just posted a MacBook Event round-up with all the news/rumors about today’s announcements. Check it out for a refresher.

11:22 am Kirk Hiner said:

Want to make sure straight off the bat that you all saw the newly “leaked” MacBook Pro pics. Excited? Indifferent?
