David Cook, the man that sung his way into many Americans’ hearts on the last American Idol, has found an interesting way to distribute his latest single, “Light On.” Instead of just having it appear in the iTunes Music Store, it will also make its way onto the App Store. That’s right, “Light On” will be part of a $1.99 light application that plays the song while displaying a lighter. It should be available later this week.
Although this isn’t late breaking news, it does raise some interesting questions. Will we see more of this in recent months? For example, will bands start to create apps alongside of their albums that would allow users to access bonus material and content? It would be really interesting to be able to purchase an app that not only plays a band’s music, but also asks trivia questions or plays some sort of interactive video during it (maybe even a visualizer?). This could really make sense in some cases as well as help the band make more money.
What do you think? The possibilities for this kind of expansion are endless. It could go from apps that serve as virtual books for bands’ autobiographies to just simply a skateboard game for a skater band. Would you like to see more of this creativity in the future?

A suggestion to Mr. Cook's publicist: for press photos, it's generally best to make sure your client doesn't look like a drunk caught in the act of urinating on a wall.
Even in rock music.
Applications for cell phones are a great idea. David Cook is a graphic designer as well as a fantastic recording artist. Kudos for David Cook or whomever for the brilliant idea of the Lighter Application. I am certain that everyone who enjoys his music and has an iPhone will purchase this application. I hope even more complex applications for his music, as well as other bands, become available in the future.

Interesting, but pointless.
