According to NPD Research, the iPhone surpassed the Mototal RAZR as the leading handset purchased by adults in the United States during the third quarter of this year. Motorola’s device had been atop the list for the last three years with Research in Motion’s Blackberry Curve, LG’s Rumor, and LG’s enV2 currently behind it in that order, but Apple manged to beat all of them. Ross Rubin, director of industry analysis for NPD, believes, “The displacement of the RAZR by the iPhone 3G represents a watershed shift in handset design from fashion to fashionable functionality.” Keep in mind, NPD does not include corporate or enterprise purchases in their data.
NPD Research was able to determine this data using the more than 150,000 online surveys that they receive each month. This is quite an astonishing achievement for Apple, as the iPhone was first available on June 27th, 2007, a little more than a year ago. To go from nothing to the leading handset purchased by adults in that short of a time is very impressive, and just goes to show how much people love reliable phones.
